I was awarded the 2020 Electrical Engineering Leadership Award for my graduating class, along with Micah Hollen and Trevor Hargrave!
This is the first year three students have demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout our time at Western Washington University, so rather than select one the faculty decided to bestow the award to each of us for our unique efforts.
Throw Back!
I decided to share this news with one of my favorite images from a university sponsored photo shoot in 2017. I was in my first year in the program and excited for all that was in store for me. (Check out my small EKG circuit I built in my free time!) One of the most important lessons I learned is the community we build, whether it be at school or at work, can be your biggest support or your greatest challenge. While the road was tough, it was a rewarding one, and I am most grateful for the community my peers and I built along the way. I know the person in this photo would be proud of where I am today.
Excerpt by faculty:
Mia holds the title of President of WWU’s IEEE student branch, and has been an active member of SWE; in their tenure as IEEE Student President, they led the IEEE club to be more structured and created sub-working groups focused on areas such as peer mentoring, outreach, etc. In addition, Mia was a TA for multiple courses and they consistently showed a strong commitment to furthering an inclusive climate and culture within the EE program through their initiatives and contributions, including co-organizing (with SWE) a spring 2019 "diversity guest talk series" event.
Get Inspired
I attribute my motivation to remaining inspired. At Western Washington University, I had great opportunities to network with incredible scientists and attend thought-provoking events that pushed the boundaries of what I thought possible.
